I don't know if Steiner is a very popular guy between the FFIX fans... for a start, I should remember that FFIX seems to be the 'black sheep' of the Final Fantasy series. Personally I loved it, but so many people seem to think it is the worst of the series by far; a pity, because in my opinion the story was good, there were lots of fun situations, some scenaries and creatures were amazing and most of the characters were more than lovable. Including, of course, Steiner - my fav one along with Vivi.
Let's be honest: at first Steiner is so pigheaded that he's almost unbearable, living only to serve Queen Brahne and to protect Garnet from everything and everyone, treating her always as a child. It seems he's not able to think by himself, that he can do nothing but follow the given orders as the soldier he is: no matter what the circumstances are, he only believes what he's been told, not what he can see by himself... Anyway, when is known that Brahne is on Kuja's side, things change a lot for Steiner because he finally opens his eyes to the evidence and accepts what's really happening, and from that moment onwards we can see a Steiner more... relaxed, somehow ^^; And this change is extremely good for the character, I can tell you, because from that moment we can see the true nature of Steiner we can't help but love him.
Steiner maybe needs to take the things more easy, because he can be quite harsh and intransigent sometimes... but actually he's an adorable guy, really caring and protective with his loved ones and with a strong integrity - if he's your friend, you'll never be able to doubt about his loyalty... because he would never betray you. I really like that aspect of his personality, his loyalty - and also that he's a very fun character, of course... I laughed a lot the first time I began running inside Brahne's castle, when he was the playable character, and his armour started to clank ^^; And I just love when he's pissed off and begins to jump like mad ^^;;; Besides, he's the strongest character of all, he's a really powerful warrior - and don't ask me why, but I tend to like the "strong" characters in Final Fantasy. Maybe because they all end being big guys with fierce appearance but a huge, generous heart :)
